Is a phone number really required on federal tax forms? On Calif forms it
says Optional?
From an audit 20+ years ago - I see an advantage to not provide any phone
numbers.
Any opinions?
Thanks in advance.

No. It's not required. It's not like they're going to call you. And if
you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS (or state tax
department), chances are it's a scam. Don't give them any information over
the phone.
